Borrowed Language returns with its second release this year, the second collaborative effort to date from Chicago-based producer Jeff Pietro and label owner Israel Vines. Following Pietro’s future classic ‘Still’ (charted by Surgeon, Peter Van Hoesen, Silent Servant, and many others) and Justin Ivey’s exemplary ‘Apparition Bay’ (rated by Rob Hall and DJ Pete), Vines and Pietro prove that they’re more than up to the challenge — delivering perhaps an even stronger statement of intent than their earlier joint effort, ‘Distance No Object’.

As with BLX–2, ‘Disintegrate’ features two collaborative efforts aimed at the dance floor, in addition to two solo ambient pieces by each artist. ‘Oscillate’ might be the most devastating piece their partnership has yielded thus far — an industrial-tinged behemoth that lays waste to everything in its path; once it has you in its grasp, it refuses to let go. ‘Field Image’ closes the first side with Pietro’s solo contribution to the EP, and it’s a quietly meditative marvel — opaque, but indescribably gorgeous. An inchoate form looms and hovers before it vanishes as quickly as it materialized.

Side B opens with ‘Depth’, another joint effort, and as with their other tracks, this is deep, forward-thinking techno at its best, with some surprising melodic elements that appear mid-way through the track. The EP concludes with Vines’ ‘Reveal’, a dark, foreboding chasm of a track that teases with rhythmic elements that never quite develop; full of post-millennial tension, it's a riveting listen from beginning to end.

With this in mind, Borrowed Language, a label not based out of any city in particular, seeks to give something of substance back rather than contribute to the morass of disposable lifestyle music. ... more
